Weight Gainers (also known as Mass Gainers) are commonly presented & sold as Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods in New Zealand - Weight Gaining, Mass Gainers or simply just Weight Gainers are a specific type of protein based supplement used to help people quickly gain mass or weight. In order to gain weight and muscle mass, you generally need to increase the amount of calories and energy you have each day. Simply put, you need to eat more energy than you expend. While it is always recommended that you get the majority of your energy and nutrients from real foods, during a mass gaining phase, this can become monotonous and can impede your workouts and training to the additional bulk. A convenient way to get a quick hit of concentrated and nutritionally dense calories is through Weight Gaining Protein Powders.
When choosing your weight gain protein powder, it is important to consider a couple of factors. How much weight you want to gain and how fast you want that weight gain to be will be dependent on the nutritional profile of your Weight Gainer. For those who want to gain weight fast, pick one with an extremely high amount of carbs, usually on a 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 carb ratio or even more. For those focusing more on a slower weight gain approach, this ratio tends to be closer to 1 to 1. It will also ultimately depend on the amount of calories you’re getting throughout the day, from your shake and your food. A good Weight Gainer should contain carbohydrates with a predominant amount of it being complex carbohydrates rather than sugar, which can spike insulin levels – a potent hormone which can result in fat storage. The Weight Gainer should comprise a variety of protein types including whey protein isolate, casein, soy and egg protein. A good variety and amount of protein will help the muscle building process and to ensure that you gain most of you mass as muscle rather than fat. Weight Gainers will still tend to have some amounts of fat, as they are extremely concentrated sources of energy and can really add to your daily intake. As with normal diets, try to avoid Weight Gain Protein Powders with a high amount of saturated fat, but high in unsaturated and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. The latter have the added benefit of improving recovery, reducing muscle soreness and supporting brain and mental function.
While it is inevitable you will gain some of that mass as fat mass, you can minimise the amount of fat gained by increasing the amount of high intensity cardio performed during the bulking and mass gaining phase. This type of exercise will still positively promote muscle protein synthesis and offer leaner gains without additional fat mass. One of the major factors to consider when buying your Mass Gaining Protein Powder is the price and cost effectiveness. For many 1-3 shakes per day is the norm and this can quickly add up on a 6-12 weeks bulking phase. Weight gainers are a perfect protein for hardgainers and those who want to gain some mass before cutting down. They stack well with recovery supplements such as creatine and BCAAs as well as pre- and intra-workout supplements.
Weight gaining protein supplements are not a sole source of nutrition and should be used in conjunction with an appropriate physical training or exercise programme.
