Essential fatty acids are called “essential” because the body is not able to manufacture them, we must ingest them in our daily diet.
From omega-3 linolenic acid, a complicated process within the body produces other long-chain fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) essential for control of inflammation and cardiovascular health and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) essential for maintaining healthy brain, nerve and eye tissues.
Consumption of omega-6 has become excessive whilst omega-3 in the diet has dwindled. This may be contributing to degenerative heart, brain, eye and inflammatory conditions becoming more prevalent.
