Fat Burners
Fat Burners are commonly presented & sold as Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods or Listed Therapeutic Goods in New Zealand – Fat loss supplements, thermogenics or fat burners are a category of supplement which helps raise the body’s internal temperature as a way of increasing the amount of calories burnt. Increasing the body’s temperature helps calories to be used as energy rather than be stored as fat. The most effective fat burning supplements contain a variety of ingredients which helps create a highly thermogenic environment in the body. Many of these ingredients also work to reduce appetite and increase satiety or fullness as a way to work synergistically with the thermogenic ingredients. Some of these common ingredients include:
Garcinia Cambogia1,2: An effective appetite suppressant and weight loss promoter, it can help to increase fat mobilisation so that it can be used as energy. The ingredient can also help to promote glycogen synthesis which can increase energy levels which may be lacking during times of dieting.
Citrus Aurantium3: Also known as bitter orange, citrus aurantium and its most notable active component synephrine is an effective fat burning ingredient which helps use up calories, which may have normally been stored as fat. It can raise the body’s metabolic rate and increase energy levels, all without affecting the central nervous system and acting as a stimulant.
Coleus Forskohlii4: Better known as Forskolin, it speeds up the break down of fat stores, but also has a variety of other functions. It has been shown to help promote healthy heart function and may help to lower high levels of blood pressure. It is believe Coleus Forskohlii works by increasing the levels of the cellular messenger cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) in the body which in turn helps to enhance the degradation of fat stores to be used as energy. It may also affect levels of hunger and fullness.
Guarana Extract5: Guarana is well known ingredient known to help reduce fatigue and can help increase energy levels. It can also help to suppress the appetite and when combined with other ingredients may be able to boost their effectiveness.
Green Tea Extract6: A popular ingredient which can not only increase energy levels and reduce fatigue, it also functions to help the body burn fat. This fat burning function is increased when combined with other ingredients listed here. It can also help affect cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Banaba Leaf Extract7:This ingredient can help with lipid or fat metabolism as well as controlling carbohydrate cravings, but its most important role is to help regulate blood sugar levels in the body by helping to transport blood sugar into cells as quickly as possible.
White Willow Bark8: A good source of salicin and other salicylate compounds, which are commonly found in aspirin, White Willow Bark can help to boost weight and fat loss.
Potassium Pyruvate9: Or any other form of pyruvate is an ingredient which helps boost fat loss and facilitates the transport of sugar into muscle tissues to help increase the amount of available energy. It can also help to increase metabolic rate to aid in calories spent throughout the day.
Spirulina10,11: Derived from algae, spirulina has long been used to support healthy body function and a general sense of well being. It can help to reduce muscle damage post-exercise and helps sustain weight maintenance. It has also been used to help lower and support healthier cholesterol levels.
Alpha Lipoic Acid12,13: ALA is another commonly used ingredient in fat loss supplements as it has the capability to suppress appetite and increase metabolic rate. It helps to boost the effectiveness of several other ingredients and supplements such as creatine due to its ability to enhance the action of insulin and help sugars to be carried into the muscle to act as energy reserves.
Guggul Extract14,15: Commonly used as an anti-inflammatory agent, it can also help to improve blood lipid levels as well as reducing cholesterol.
Cayenne16: Derived from chilli, cayenne extract helps to raise the body’s metabolic rate through the thermogenic action of the compound capsaicin. Subjects taking cayenne have been shown to have increased fat loss with improved control over the rise of blood sugars.
The most commonly used fat loss products on the market today, Thermogenic Fat Burning Supplements are a convenient way to help support weight and fat loss and stack well with other supplements such as 7-Keto, L-Carnitine, ALC and CLA. As many contain the stimulant caffeine, they are best cycled over time to maintain effectiveness.
Fat Burners are not a sole source of nutrition and should be used in conjunction with an appropriate physical training or exercise programme. Not suitable for children or pregnant women. Should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision. Always read label prior to use.
