Antioxidants
Antioxidants are commonly presented & sold as Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods in New Zealand – Antioxidants are compounds found in a variety of foods such as fruits and vegetables which help to protect cells within the body. All living things need oxygen to survive, however certain by-products of oxygen called free radicals can occur in the human body and negatively affect our health by destroying cells in our body. These free radicals and their formation can be increased in response to a variety of factors including UV exposure, pollutants, smoking and even exercise. While people who exercise tend to have better health and live longer than sedentary individuals, athletes, bodybuilders and other vigorous trainers who have higher oxygen consumption also run the risk of increased free radical production in their body.
While the average moderate trainer doesn’t have to worry too much about increased levels of free radicals, high intensity trainers or frequent trainers who put their body through a large amount of stress can run the risk of extra damage from the increased number of free radicals in the body. These free radicals can wreck havoc on your overall health as well as your immune system and can hinder your progress or your ability to recover and train. Endurance trainers in particular who have a huge oxygen consumption pattern are placed at higher risk. Antioxidants can help halt the damage caused by free radicals and ensure that the body is in perfect health. These antioxidants can help to protect cells from free radical damage but also have a whole range of other health benefits.
There have been studies showing increased antioxidants in the body over a long period of time can result in a longer life expectancy and can even assist in certain medical conditions such as heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases and age-related diseases. Antioxidant supplements contain a variety of ingredients with some of the most common being Vitamins A, C and E, compounds called carotenoids (such as beta carotene), alpha lipoic acid, zinc, copper, coenzyme Q10, green tea extract, glutathione, milk thistle and cysteine. Antioxidants tend to work well together or in conjunction with other recovery supplements such as BCAAs (branched chain amino acids), Essential Amino Acids, glutamine and protein. While its convenient to consume antioxidants in supplement form, this is no replacement for obtaining the majority of your antioxidants from whole foods.
Anti-oxidant supplements are not a sole source of nutrition and should be used in conjunction with an appropriate physical training or exercise programme. Not suitable for children or pregnant women. Should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision. Always read label prior to use.
