Healthy Fats & Oils
Healthy Fats & Oils are commonly presented & sold as Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods in New Zealand – Also known as Essential fatty acids (EFAs), this category includes two groups of fatty acids which are required to be obtained from either diet or supplementation as they can’t be made in the body. One of the essential fatty acids, the omega 3 essential fatty acid can be found in fish such as salmon, tuna, herring and mackerel as well as flaxseed and walnuts among other foods. The other group of essential fatty acids, the omega 6 fatty acids can be found mostly in vegetable oils such as sunflower, wheat germ, soya and thistle oil. Both these EFAs are polyunsaturated and over the years have become one of the top supplements and compounds found to be crucial to good health.
Omega 3 fatty acids include the two important eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), which are found in oily, salt and cold water fish. Seaweed are also good sources, however few other plant foods contain EPA or DHA. There is a third omega 3 essential fatty acid known as alpha linolenic acid (ALA) which is found in vegetable oils, flaxseed oils and dark green leafy vegetables. ALA has different functions in the body to EPA and DHA but there are enzymes in the body which can convert ALA to EPA. Regardless, all three are important to human health.
The omega 6 essential fatty acids are also extremely beneficial with the most beneficial ones containing linoleic acid. They can be transformed in the body to make gamma linoleic acid (GLA) and ultimately to compounds called prostaglandins which helps to regulate important functions in the body including inflammation, blood pressure and even gastrointestinal, heart and kidney functions. Omega 6 fatty acids are easily found in cereals, eggs, poultry, most vegetable oils, margarine, baked foods and whole grain breads. Both types of essential fatty acids are equally important for optimal health and one should not overload on either of the two. However modern day Western diets seem to be heavy on the omega-6 fatty acid, which usually occurs at the expense of omega-3 fatty acids. What this means is that generally speaking, there is little need for omega-6 fatty acid supplementation.
By far the best and most bioavailable way to obtain essential fatty acids is to consume real foods high in both of the EFAs including oily fish, flax seed, walknuts, eggs and poultry. Essential fatty acid supplements such as (fish oil, flaxseed oil and evening primrose oil) are helpful for those diets lower in these foods or generally low in these essential fatty acids. Studies on omega-3 fatty acids show that higher intakes of this EFA can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, help with fat burning and also in boosting your metabolic rate. Supplements high in omega 6 fatty acids including evening primrose oil, borage oil, blackcurrent seed oil and flaxseed oil are helpful due to the high concentrations of GLA which can help with inflammation. Essential fatty acids are a vital component to everyday good health and can assist in trainers by improving recovery and reducing muscular damage. As with most health supplements, essential fatty acids can be easily stacked with any other supplement, particularly protein, other amino acids and fat loss thermogenic supplements. Those using fat metabolising supplements may find that they require a slightly higher dose of essential fatty acids to compensate for the increased use while on these supplements.
Healthy Fats & Oils are not a sole source of nutrition and should be used in conjunction with an appropriate physical training or exercise programme. Not suitable for children or pregnant women. Should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision. Always read label prior to use.
