Q. Where are the amino acids that Musashi produces dervied from? (Posted: 14th Dec, 2006)
A. Firstly it must be said that while amino acids are mainly found in animal proteins they are not derived commercially from animals. The most common method of production of amino acids is via a fermentation process.

Selected microorganisms are fed with nutrients such as corn steep liquor. When they grow the microorganisms secrete amino acids into the liquid surrounding them. When the culture is mature the cells are removed from the liquid by a settling and filtration process.

Another technique for producing amino acids is the use of enzymes to convert precursors into amino acids. Some amino acids can be produced synthetically.

This involves a number of chemical reactions with no involvement of biological material. The other method that has been used is extraction from biological material such as plants or vegetable sources The only substance that is extracted from an animal source is Glucosamine from shellfish, all other amino acids come from vegetable or inert inorganic substances.

The reason we prefer not to mix those large doses of targeted amino acids in with protein powders is that, it affects bioavailability. Bioavailability gauges the extent to which an ingested substance reaches its site of action or utilisation in the body.

Bioavailability is thus a measure of the efficiency of delivery – how much of that which is ingested is actually used for its intended purpose.

The easiest and most reliable way to deliver specific amino acids is to administer the particular amino acids by themselves. A singular (unbonded) amino acid can elevate its level in the general circulation within 15 minutes, making it readily available for utilisation at the site where it’s needed.

Protein needs time to digest before it can be absorbed. So it’s better to take the amino acids first straight after workouts, then the protein shake about 15 mins later.

I.e. its best to take amino acids with a glass of water, on an empty stomach before taking other supplements.
